Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q556978). Samuel Coleridge-Taylorâs Papillon for solo piano was first published in 1908 by Augener Ltd. Following George Augenerâs retirement in 1910, the work along with the whole Augener catalogue (which contained no less than 24 other works by Coleridge-Taylor), was aquired by Schott and Co. Ltd. At the time both companies occupied offices on Great Marlborough Street, London. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognised as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself as Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on thirteen occasions to date. Like many works from this period, at some point in the past Papillon became out of print. Schott Music is now very pleased to present this new modern performing edition with errors and inconsistencies from the original edition now corrected.

In più, ogni tentantivo di reinterpretarla con altra musica richiede di essere un artista altrettanto grande: io non sono nè grande nè artista, al limite... essere.Ho cercato perciò di stare vicino all'orginale, riconoscibile dal motivetto in sedicesimi che si ripete per tutta la canzone.Poiché si sa che la versione vocale stufa prima delle versioni suonate e l'originale dura 4 minuti, ho tagliato l'intera strofa Ti porterò.... Per chi volesse reinserirla, è facile: dalla battuta 41 si torna alla 5, si ripercorre fino alla 18 (con il testo cambiato per il solista, Ti porterò..., ma le altre voci sono identiche ) e si riprende dalla 42 fino alla fine.[ENGLISH]Arranging a piece by Franco Battiato it's not an easy game: lyrics are often very far in time and his singing very personal and narrative. Here the lyrics tells a love in a hard moment of life and every element is placed in a delicate balance where any change can be disruptive.Even trying to modify the music style would require an artist of the same weight, and I am not.So I tried to stay close to the original, using the most recognizable pattern of the song (the notes in sixteenth).Since we know that the vocal versions have to be shorter than the played ones (ears get bored before) and the original song if 4 minutes long, I cut the entire verse Ti porterò.... For those who want to play also the missing part, itâs easy: from bar 41 go back to bar 5, sing up to bar 18 (with the lyrics changed for the lead, Ti porterò..., other voices do not change) and then go ahead to bar 42 and from there to the end.

The first was Eurydice, a tone poem on the Orpheus myth for cello and orchestra, and the second was La Chimera Fantastica for the DÃaz Trio. Canções e Sambinhas is in four movements. I. Canção de amor ... II. Sambinha bachiana ... III. Valsa lenta ... IV. Mais uma vêz ... Having lived in Brazil during my teen-age years, I inevitably continue to return to the wonderful music of that country for inspiration: the chôros of Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinginha, and Heitor Villa-Lobos. The first movement begins with a slow, dark introduction before the love song emerges .... The second movement is a lively samba. As the title indicates, it is a little samba infused with Bach-like counterpoint, although a bit crazier. Villa-Lobos might find this amusing .... The third movement is a slow meditation for the cello on a passacaglia-like theme in the piano. The last movement, Mais uma vêz (meaning One Mo' Time in English), is a samba like the second movement, but it is set more homophonically, more dance-like in character .... Et à ce jour, nous navons aucune trace dautres uvres composées par Tolstoï.<br>Vers la fin des années 90, la BBC a diffusé une intervention de Isaiah Berlin (philosophe, président de la British Academy) qui parlait de luvre de Tolstoï « La Sonate à Kreutzer », l'histoire d'un homme obsessionnellement jaloux de sa femme, qui tue le violoniste avec qui elle joue juste parce quil suppose linfidélité de son épouse. En aparté de lanalyse, il tint ces propos : « il était très musicien, Tolstoï ! Il a écrit une valse - [...] J'ai entendu dire qu'il la joué. Elle est éditée dans un livre. Ma femme la joué pour moi, c'est très simple ». <br>A partir de là, cette valse a été retrouvée, manuscrite, en appendice dun ouvrage russe intitulé « Leo Tolstoy and Music » (N. Gusev et Gol'denveizer). Lors dun entretien, Goldenveizer en parle comme ceci : « Dans sa jeunesse, le conte Lev Nikolaïevitch (Tolstoï) a composé une valse pour le Piano. Lorsque, en 1906, jétais à Lasnaïa Poliana (Grand domaine familiale des Tolstoï où lécrivain finit sa vie, et où il y repose), Lev Nikolaïevitch la joué devant nous. Nous avons effectué alors le relevé.
